The wind blows hollowly as if mourning a loss. It whispers through the bare trees that are free of branches. Leaves withered and fallen to the ground. Birds no longer sing they are silent and wide-eyed. The moonlight casts shadows from the trees on the cold, barren ground. It will never be the same.

Insatiable I thought about you today. You wouldn't get out of my mind. You were in the breeze that tossed my hair, The grass beneath my feet, And the angry clouds in the sky. You were in my locker when it was opened, And beside me while I worked. You held my coat while I put it on. And I smiled. But the smile was not genuine. I looked in the mirror, And did not see your face next to mine. I shivered, suddenly cold, And tucked it away. It was then I realized you had not Spoken those three words For what seemed like a lifetime. Tears threatening to spill over glassy eyes, I walked away. Alone.

Others have squeezed my herat And ripped it out. Though it manages to find its way Back to its place. He has ripped it out Stomped on it perhaps Leaving it a hundred peices. I am able to pick up Most of the fragments Though there are some chips That only he can replace. Others help to put me together. He helps. Slowly. And I am again whole. Though still fragile And will remain forever shattered If he breaks me again.

She Dances She dances Through the field Long, wet grass twisting Round her legs Her long dress Billowing white dress Gets wet And still she dances Her long hair Golden curly hair Cascades down her back Fanning out As she twirls She lifts her face Raises it to the sky Cloudy grey sky Damp crisp air Caresses her skin Flushes her cheeks And he watches Silent, unnoticed From behind the trees His eyes wander Up and down her body Her grace, beauty He catches his breath And still she dances Eyes closed

Silence My heart beats loudly Echoing off bare walls Past frightened eyes Hollow eyes Which have lost their luster They hide tears That would fall too loudly They must never start Feet pad cautiously across the floor A cold, hard floor Blanketed in dirt Dirt that goes unnoticed Pain grows deep in my belly More each day Pain which threatens to swallow me up The rations of food becoming scarce Turn bones weak And leave a coldness that won't go away The shawl is torn Though I pull it tighter It does not bring warmth Only comfort As I sit in silence Waiting for what is to come.

The Star (c) Karly W. The night was quiet. He looked up to the sky where a lone star twinkled with a familiar beauty. He sunk down into the grass and twisted it around his fingers, trying not to cry. He wrenched his eyes from the sky and picked a wild rose. Smelling it, he was reminded. The familiar scent haunted him. A single tear escaped. He stared at the blurry rose and fingered the petals lovingly. Grasping the stem too tightly, he pricked his finger. Almost as if it was punishment but he knew he deserved more. His eyes wandered up to the sky. The star had vanished A cloud covering it.

Perfection (c) Karly W. She's perfect, he thought gazing through the glass to where she stood laughing. Her eyes were the prettiest he'd ever seen. Green with flecks of gold. Her hair was rich and coppery. Lips full and red, cheeks flushed. She was beautiful. He watched longingly. His hand pressed against the cool glass wishing it were her skin. Dying to be able to touch her just once. He ached to hold her and whisper in her ear. He would cherish her. Looking back through the glass he saw her kiss HIM. He averted his eyes and sighed. Some things could never be.

She brings the bottle of water up to her parched lips. A cool river of liquid flows down the desert in her mouth. In a gulp, she forces it down her throat. She's almost sick. She hasn't been able to eat or drink since last night. Her mother is sitting beside her, looking cool and aloof. The girl feels the need to clutch onto her mom's arm, but resists, knowing her mom won't bring her comfort. Wiping sweaty hands on the front of her jeans, she darts her eyes around in anticipation.
